It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Augustus (Gus) Winchester on November 5, 2023, in Thomasville, GA. Born on July 18, 1943, in Murphy, NC, Augustus was the beloved son of the late Edwin and Ruby McCombs Winchester.
Gus was a man of many talents and passions. He excelled in his career as an automotive teacher, dedicating his efforts to shaping the minds and futures of countless students at DeKalb Technical School. His wisdom and expertise were unparalleled, leaving an indelible mark on all those he taught. Gus also was the proud owner of three auto parts business Mustang Auto Parts, Gresham Auto Parts, and Pine Lake Auto Parts where he received enjoyment helping friends and customers repair and rebuild automobiles.
Outside of his professional life, Gus had a zest for life that was contagious. He was an incredible mechanic and a skilled carpenter, transforming the ordinary into works of art. Gus also showcased his creativity through painting on canvas, leaving behind a collection of pieces that captured the essence of his soul.
An author with a flair for culinary delights, Gus penned a cherished cookbook that showcased his passion for the culinary arts. His recipes were cherished by family and friends, and his legacy as a talented cook will endure for generations to come.
Throughout his life, Gus nurtured a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He found solace and joy in casting his fishing line into serene waters, accompanied by the sounds of nature's symphony. When time allowed, he embarked on adventurous travels, exploring new horizons and forging cherished memories.
Gus was a lover of classic cowboy shows, immersing himself in tales of heroism and adventure. Gene Autry, Dale Evans, Roy Rogers, and the Lone Ranger held a special place in his heart, reminding him of simpler times and inspiring him to chase his dreams fearlessly.
Gus was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 62 years, Ruth Ann Winchester, whom he met in first grade and dated through high school and college. Together, they navigated life's trials and triumphs, building a foundation of unwavering love and support that will forever endure.
He was a dedicated father to his son and daughter-in-law, Bruce Dewayne and Kristin Winchester of Freeport, FL. Gus found companionship and joy in the form of his beloved pets, Willie Nelson Winchester and Waylon Jennings Winchester, who were faithful friends and integral parts of his life.
Gus is preceded in death by his brother, Tommy Winchester, whose memory he held dear.
Gus Burns Winchester will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. His enduring spirit, loving nature, and zest for life will forever be etched in our hearts.
