Helen Cynthia Stokes, a beloved member of the Thomasville community, passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 81. Born on May 30, 1942, in Metcalfe, Georgia, Helen was the daughter of the late John Flavous H Harvell and Cynthia Wells Harvell.
Helen lived a fulfilling life, grounded in her strong work ethic and commitment to her family. After graduating from high school, she worked at Warner’s in Thomasville as a seamstress, then moved to Quincy Florida where she worked as a secretary with Frosty Morn Meat Packing, before embarking on a successful career as a secretary at the Coastal Lumber Company. Her dedication and hard work were evident. She befriended many of the Loggers and Landowners and kept up with their Spouses and Children. She retired after an impressive 38 years of service.
Beyond her work, Helen found joy in simple pleasures. An avid reader, she would often immerse herself in the pages of a good book. Her talent for crocheting allowed her to create beautiful and thoughtful pieces, which she lovingly gifted to her family and friends. Helen's creations will forever be cherished, serving as tangible reminders of her love and creativity.
Adventurous and eager to share laughter, Helen enjoyed spending quality time with loved ones. Enjoying social outings and providing southern cooked meals to friends and family, she found delight in connecting with those around her. Helen's involvement with the Silver Sneaker program and Senior Citizens Center, kept her active and vibrant, further reinforcing her zest for life.
Helen was a member of the Metcalf Community Association, always dedicated to preserving the memories and traditions of her cherished hometown. Throughout her life, she remained a devout worshipper at Metcalf Methodist Church, embodying the values and principles instilled in her from a young age. Her unwavering faith was a beacon of light and comfort.
Helen's life was defined by her profound love and commitment to her family. She shared 52 beautiful years of marriage with her late husband, Larry Stokes, until his passing. Together, they created a loving and nurturing home for their children.
Helen leaves behind a son and daughter-in-law, Carroll and Sally Stokes of Atlanta, Georgia, and a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Greg Larson of Gulf Breeze, Florida. She was a proud grandmother to Rachael Stokes and Samantha Galaviz and husband Knate, and a great-grandmother to Rowan and Raiya. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Flavous H Harvell and Cynthia Wells Harvell, as well as her siblings, Jimmy Harvell, Martin Harvell, Johnny Harvell, and Eugenia Patrick.
Funeral services and ceremony will be held Saturday November 4th at 11am in the Metcalfe Methodist Church, providing us with the opportunity to honor Helen's remarkable life and offer comfort to those who loved her.
