We mourn the passing of Herschel “Doc” Lee Elder, Jr. of Thomasville, GA, with deep sorrow and much love. Herschel passed from this life on August 12, 2022, peacefully at home, attended by his loving wife.
Born May 1, 1936, in Newport News, VA, he was the son of the late Herschel Lee Elder, Sr., and Laura Mae Elder of Hampton, VA.
He will be affectionately remembered by his wife of 30 years, Arlene Elder. His four sons will dearly miss Doc; Herschel III “Joe” Elder, Alan (Diane) Elder, David “Wink” (Jerrie) Elder, and Mark Anthony “Tony” (Debbie) Elder, as well as 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild.
Herschel is pre-deceased by his parents, his sister Peggy Shackleford, Faye Turner, and his granddaughter, Kristina Elder.
Doc, known as “Bub” growing up, attended Newport News High School. He enlisted in the Navy Reserves and served as part of a flight crew. Doc attended Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Associate Ministry. He then served as an ordained Missionary Minister at Grange Hall Church in Frederick, MD. He also spent many years in the transportation business field.
While he loved gospel music and once sang in a barbershop quartet, he was known as a happy-go-lucky person and animated umpire. Doc loved to make people laugh, fish, hunt, and play golf, but he always said golf was a four-letter word to him. Most of all, we will remember Doc for how he loved his wife, his boys, and his family fiercely. Doc will be deeply missed by all fortunate enough to be part of his life.
A private memorial with his family will be in September. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with his family @
