J. D. Yowhn

May 6, 1918 — December 7, 2004

J. D. Yowhn, 86, of Barwick, Georgia, passed away Tuesday afternoon at home peacefully surrounded by his family.

J.D. was born May 6, 1918, one of five children to the late Jesse Yowhn and Mattie Atkins Yowhn, in Colquitt County, Georgia and was raised in the Berlin Community. He met his future wife, Alma King, at a tent revival in Brooks County, Georgia and they were married in September 0f 1936. J.D. and Alma raised six children of whom they were both very proud. J.D. and Alma instilled into them the values of hard work, love of family and the importance of family. J.D. was a no frills, tough, but gentle, hardworking man who farmed all of his life until his retirement in 1973. He loved his family to gather and fellowship with laughter and love and share a meal even up until his death.

J.J., as he was lovingly called by his family, loved his chewing tobacco and to fish. Ironically, he was allergic to eat fish or even touch them with his bare hands, but this did not stop him from putting on gloves and fishing anyway. J.J. also had a nick name for every member of the family including his son-in-laws and most anyone else who he met.

A service to celebrate the life of J.D. Yowhn will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 10, 2004 from the graveside of Roselawn Cemetery in Barwick with The Reverend Phillip Hudson, Barwick Baptist Church and The Reverend Jimmy Love, Kennedy Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, officiating. The family will greet friends Thursday evening from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM at Allen and Allen Funeral Home.

J.D. is survived by his six loving children: Doyle Yowhn and wife, Joyce of Coolidge, GA ; Winona ?Pearl? Taylor and husband, L.M. of Pavo, GA; Bonnie Faye Davis and husband, Willie of Barwick, GA; Peggy Hunter and husband, Bobby; Kay Vonier and husband, Edward; Janice Hart and husband, James all of Pavo, GA; four grandchildren: Patsy Strickland and husband, Curtis of Adel, GA; Derek Hunter of Charlotte, NC; Jonathan Hart and wife, April of Pavo, GA; and Heather Vonier of Atlanta, GA; one great-granddaughter, Victoria Strickland of Adel, GA.

J.D. was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alma King Yowhn, who he was dedicated to until her death in 1988.
