Jack Hunter Drew, Sr.
Services for Jack Hunter Drew, Sr., 84, of Boston are at 1p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at Ebenezer Methodist Church. Rev. Tegler Greer and Rev. Marshall Singletary will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Drew, Veteran of World War II, member of International Brotherhood of Electrical workers, member of the Masons, retired Department of Labor federal employee and former chairman of the Clayton County GA Water Authority, passed away at his home near Boston, GA on Feb. 1, 2010. By the time Jack was seven years old, both parents Hardy and Alvis Drew of Thomasville were deceased. His father was a prominent businessman who owned several pieces of property as well as several saw mills. Minnie and J.B. Wilson, his grandparents, took Jack and his brother Billie, into their house and gave them a good family home. Jack attended Eastside School in Thomasville, GA and Carlisle Military School in South Carolina. On May 22, 1942, Jack joined the U.S. Navy. He went through training in Norfolk, VA. He then went to Little Creek, VA to train as a Coxswain on a 35? and 50? landing boats. At the end of 1942, Mr. Drew found himself in the Solomon Islands in the Southwest Pacific at the age of 17, serving under Admiral ?Bull? Halsey. During that time the United States was losing the war. He endured many hardships and close calls. One of his jobs was to count the Japanese bombs that were dropping on Guadalcanal in his areas. The Japanese wanted to take these bombs back. He was also a Veteran of the U.S. Army. In 1946, he returned to Thomasville, worked as an electrician and operated a service station at one time. In 1950, he married Mary Frances Sculley of Boston, GA. Jack always said that this was the best decision he ever made. Jack and Frances had three children, Hunter, Mickey and Abigail. Mr. Drew worked several jobs in Thomasville, none of which turned out well. He could see that there was no place in Thomasville at that time for a young man wanting to advance. In 1958, Jack and Frances moved to College Park, GA. Then they moved to Jonesboro, GA in 1962, and lived there for thirty-six years. In 1985, Mr. Drew was chosen Chairman of the Clayton County Water Authority, serving in that capacity for thirteen years of his twenty-three years of service for the Water Authority. At the age of 74, he became a First Responder with the Reichertville Volunteer Fire Department, in which he also drove the tank truck. Survivors include wife, Frances; sons, Hunter Drew of Boston, GA, Mickey Drew of Stockbridge, GA; daughter, Abigail Abel of Senoia, GA; six grandchildren, Dawn Hurst, Shane Drew, Josh Drew, Sallie McHugh, Jane Abel and Mary Kate Abel; two great-grandchildren, Kaitylyn Hurst and Dalton Drew. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home on Tuesday. Visitors may sign the online guest register at www.allenfh.com .
