A memorial service for Jacquelyn “Jackie” Herring Higgins, 63, of Thomasville, is at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Thomasville First United Methodist Church. The Rev Ronnie Wills will officiate. A private internment service for the family will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery. She was the daughter of the late Jack and Roselyn Hancock Herring and grew up in Ochlocknee, GA. Jackie is survived by her devoted husband John Higgins of forty one years. Also surviving are her two loving daughters, McCay Higgins Manwaring and son in law Kevin of Charlotte, NC, and Jennifer Taylor Higgins of Atlanta, GA. Jackie also has a precious granddaughter, Pippin Elizabeth Manwaring. Surviving are two siblings, Lynette Fulghum (Paul) of Jacksonville, FL and Ronnie Herring (Sharon) of Ochlocknee, GA.
Jackie lived in Thomas County all of her life. She attended Thomas County Central High School and graduated from The University of Georgia. At the University of Georgia, Jackie was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority where she made many lifelong friends. After graduation she moved back to Thomasville and married John Higgins. Jackie worked at the Department of Family and Children Services prior to starting her family. Years later she earned her teaching degree from Valdosta State University and taught language arts in the Thomasville City School system until her retirement.
Jackie was actively involved in her community. She was a member and served on numerous committees at the First United Methodist Church. She was also involved in multiple community organizations including the Junior Service League, Girl Scout Troop Leader, Thomasville/Thomas County Historical Society, Thomasville Antique Show Foundation Board and many others. Jackie loved being with people arranging flowers, attending retriever trials, playing bridge, traveling or just having a good time. She was loved as much as she loved, and will be missed.
