Services for Jakob Hehn, 85, 203 Robin Hood Road, Thomasville, GA are at 11 AM Saturday, January 16, at St. Augustine Catholic Church on Pinetree Blvd, with Father Jacek Szuster officiating. Interment is at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Jackson Street, Thomasville, with sons Rudy & Bill Hehn, along with grandsons Randy, Jonathan, Brian & Jeremy Hehn as active pallbearers.
Mr. Hehn died peacefully in his home on Thursday, January 14, 2010. He was surrounded by his family, whom he loved. He was born on April 10, 1924 in Parabutsch, Yugoslavia. He met his wife of 62 years, Teresia, when he was 7 years old. They were childhood sweethearts but their marriage was postponed by the chaos of World War II. He was reported missing in action but they were reunited after the war when she happened to see him repairing the bomb damaged railroad tracks while riding on a passing train. They were married in Austria where their first son, Bill, was born. Jake emigrated to Canada in 1951 and worked as a lumberjack during the winter, earning enough money to send for his family in Austria. They arrived one year later, where Teresia gave birth to her second son, Rudy. In 1960 they once again moved, this time to Ft. Pierce, Florida, where he worked as a carpenter for many years. Mr. Hehn faithfully served in the Catholic church as a member of the choir and the Knights of Columbus, earning the honor of Fourth Degree Knight. He played mandolin for his prayer group and performed traditional dances with the German Club. Their final move was in 1989 to Thomasville, Georgia, where at St. Augustine Church he was instrumental in many projects, including remodeling, repairs, and building the grotto on the church grounds.
Jakob had many interests, including gardening, home handyman projects, and playing the zither, an Austrian stringed instrument similar to a dulcimer. His deep love of music is carried on by his children and grandchildren, all of whom continue this tradition either professionally or for their own enjoyment. His carpentry skills are evident in homes in both South Florida and Thomasville.
His marriage of 63 years serves as a living example of God's plan of commitment, devotion and faithfulness. His wife, Teresia, died 5 months ago. He often said how he looked forward to being reunited with her in heaven. He leaves behind his son Bill and his wife Trudy, their son Randy and wife Emily, their daughter Julie and husband Jason. He also leaves behind his younger son Rudy, wife Susan, their son Jonathan and wife Kelly, their son Brian and wife Eve, and their son Jeremy. He was blessed by great grandchildren Kayla, Marissa and Jesse. He leaves with us his love of God, love of family, and love of life. We will miss him.
