Services for retired, Lt. Col. James E. Jack Briggs of Thomasville are at 11:00AM on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Dawson Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Lee Waller will officiate and interment will be in Young Cemetery in Rebecca, GA., at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, August 4, 2004. Honorary pallbearers are the Grady Burgess Sunday School class. Mr. Briggs died August 1, 2004 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. He was born August 7, 1927 in Douglas, GA., and was the son of the late William Tyson and Wilma White Briggs. He was married first to Pansy Carden Briggs of Cordell, GA., and later to Joan Harper Briggs of Dublin, GA., both whom preceded him in death. He later was married to Dorothy Hines Briggs, who survives in Thomasville. Mr. Briggs was a retired lieutenant colonel of the United States Air Force, serving as a C-130 navigator with a distinguished military record. He was a highly decorated veteran, having served during the Korean, Vietnam and Cold wars. One of his greatest joys was attending his squadron reunions at various locations. Mr. Briggs was able to travel extensively in this country and abroad in both his military and civilian careers. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia with degrees in chemistry and horticulture. He was an avid supporter of University of Georgia athletics. Mr. Briggs greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing and was fond of tramping through newly plowed fields in search of arrowheads and spear points. In his later years, he developed a love for rock collecting, and was a member of the Middle Georgia Gem and Mineral Society. He bowled on several leagues at Robins Air Force Base, where he was also a member of the Officers Club. He recently became a member of Dawson Street Baptist Church and he proudly served as president of his Sunday School class. Prior to that, he was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Warner Robins, GA. In addition to his wife, Mr. Briggs is also survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Terry Briggs of Stockbridge, GA, Richard and Maureen Briggs of Roswell, GA., granddaughters Katelyn and Kristen Briggs of Stockbridge, GA., and Caitlin Briggs of Rosewell, GA., sister, Betty Williamson of Rebecca, GA., brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Evelyn Briggs of Callahan, FL and several stepchildren, nieces and nephews.
