James Myles Lewis Sr

December 6, 1924 — September 19, 2020

James M. Lewis, Sr., 95, went to be with his Lord and Savior September 19, 2020, at Southern Pines in Thomasville, GA. Born December 6, 1924 in Sparta, GA to the late Hugh Alexander and Sara Chamberlain Lewis. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Catherine Hodges Lewis, two brothers, Hugh Lewis, Jr. (Alma) of Macon, GA, and Gary Lewis (Gertrude) of Sparta, GA; two sisters, Dorothy L. Harrouk (Farouk) of Sparta, GA, and Barbara L. Warren of Franklin, NC. Son, Dr. James M. Lewis, Jr, and wife, Marianne, of Boston, GA, and daughter, Cathy L. Ward, and husband, Ed Ward III, of Leesburg, FL. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jamie L. Voyles (Chris) of Boston, GA, Jarrod M. Lewis (Erin) of Fort Valley, GA, Camille Ward of Signal Mt., TN, and Edgar “Tyson” Ward IV (Jenna) of Mt. Juliet, TN. Five great grandchildren, Wesleyan Evie, and Whitley Hart of Boston, GA, and Addilynn and Caden Lewis of Fort Valley, GA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Lewis, and two sisters, Martha L. Ouimette and Sara L. Lucchesi.

Mr. Lewis was a prime example of one who loved God, his family, and his country. He joined the army in 1940 and was a Pearl Harbor survivor and fought in five major battles in the Pacific for a continuous 58 months until the war ended in 1945. He made a career of the army and after retiring in 1954, he settled with his family in Milledgeville, GA where he had a second career of 40 years as a Master Barber in his own Lewis’ Barber Shop.

In 2002, he and his wife relocated to Pavo, GA to be close to family. His wife, children and grandchildren can easily say what a devoted and loving husband, Daddy, and “Grandy” he has always been.

The scripture, II Timothy 4:7, is a perfect scripture of his life: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith. He truly finished well.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to all the ones at Southern Pines, Archbold Hospital, Camelia Gardens Rehab, and Bethany Hospice who had a hand in caring for our loved one.

There is no visitation or service planned at the present time. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Milledgeville, GA, at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
