J. T. Turner
James Thomas Turner, 86, died on Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Plantation Manor after an extended battle with cancer.
He was born on March 7, 1917 in Valdosta, Georgia to the late J. T. Turner and Maggie Turner Newton and G. C. Newton, Sr. He was a graduate of Thomasville High School and a Veteran of the United States Army after serving in World War II. He served in the 3rd Army under the Command of General George Patton. He was assigned to the 38th Antiaircraft Artillery Brigade serving in the 565th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Unit where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Turner was employed by the Postal Telepraph Company from 1935 to 1940. In 1940 he went to work for Timberlake Wholesale Grocery Company after 43 years of service Mr. Turner retired in 1983. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church where be contributed over 50 years of service. He was a member of the Fisherman Sunday School Class, Junior Board of Deacons, a member of the Board of Deacons and a life time Deacon. He was also honored in 2001 for 50 years of service as Chairman of the Ushers. He was also active Golden ?K? Kiwanis Club and a member of the Friendly Indians of the YMCA.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years Constance Flautt Turner formerly of Baltimore and their two children. Daughter Barbara Turner Vick and husband Doug M. Vick of Thomasville, GA and son James Thomas Turner, Jr. and wife Shirley B. Turner of Savannah, GA; five grandchildren, Thomas Kevin Vick and wife Sonia B. Vick of Thomasville, GA; Amanda Vick Roach and husband David M. Roach of Thomasville, GA; Mischa N. Turner, E. Victoria Turner and James Thomas Turner, III all of Savannah, GA; six great grandchildren, Tanner V. Roach, Parker W. Roach, Hayes B. Roach, Mollie C. Vick, Anna E. Vick and T. Turner Vick; one brother, Grover Newton and wife Margaret of Thomasville, GA; brother-in-law Houston H. Flautt and wife Mary Flautt of Thomasville, GA; brother-in-law Warren E. Flautt and wife Barbara Flauut of Virginia Beach, VA; brother-in-law Bruce Flautt of Baltimore, MD; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 26th from 6-8 p.m. at Allen & Allen Funeral Home in Thomasville, GA.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 27th at First Baptist Church of Thomasville, GA with Dr. Milton Gardner and Dr. Dan Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Active Pallbearers will include Thomas Kevin Vick, J.T. Tripp Turner, III, David M. Roach, Stephen E. Brett, Stephen E. Brett, Jr. and Glenn Beard.
Honorary Pallbearers will include members of the Golden ?K? and the Fisherman Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church.
