On Friday, January 20, 2023, Jean Sloan Funderburk passed peacefully after a long battle with the effects of stroke and a recent diagnosis of Covid. A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 11 AM at Laurel Hill Cemetery. She will be remembered by friends and family as a caretaker of others, and a truly kind and caring soul. She didn’t know a stranger; anyone was welcome at her table. She was patient, warm and welcoming. She was a mother to anyone who needed motherly love. Even in the worst of times as her health steadily declined, she didn’t complain. She was always more worried about those around her than herself. She was unconditional love.
She was born in Madison, Florida in 1934 and was raised on the family farm in Murphy, Georgia. She and her identical twin sister, June, grew up with an understanding of hard work, helping to pick tobacco or vegetables as the seasons demanded. She carried that work ethic throughout her life, whether she was working as a dental hygienist or helping run the family agriculture business. In 1960 she married Richard Funderburk and began to build a family of her own. Her focus remained on family for the entirety of her life. She was always the first to step in and help friends or family in their times of need, sickness, or end of life. She was selfless and tireless in her efforts to provide comfort to those who needed it. She was a shining light to all who came into contact with her. She will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, E.E. and Lillian Sloan, her twin sister, June Hegwood (and husband, Ben), and her beloved husband, Richard Funderburk. She is survived by her son, Frank Funderburk (Dawn) and her grandchildren, Paul Funderburk, Emma Funderburk, Adelyn Funderburk, Brittanie Keister, Ashton Keister and Caleb Keister. Her impact on these lives cannot be overstated. We are all so remarkably blessed to have had her in our lives.
