Jean Brown Powell Shepard
Memorial services for Jean Brown Powell Shepard will be held on September 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Allen & Allen Funeral Chapel. She passed away Wednesday afternoon, September 12, 2007. Ms. Shepard was born on September 4, 1935 to Earl and Ada Brown of Middletown, Ohio. She graduated from Hamilton High School where she was active in drama, playing the lead in many plays, including ?The Curious Savage,? ?Those Websters,? ?Cheaper by the Dozen,? and ?Oklahoma.? She continued her education at Indiana University in Bloomington and Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana where she pursued her interest in drama. She married Byron Maxey Powell of Thomasville in 1957. They lived in Williston and Jacksonville, Florida where she was involved in community affairs, organizing and participating in the Fall Follies for the Williston Junior Woman?s Club as well as participating in the Jacksonville Grey Ladies volunteer nurses and the Duval County Junior League. The couple moved to Thomasville in 1966 where she was very active in all phases of civic, religious, and political affairs. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she was the chairman of the Kindergarten Board and a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Thomasville Junior Service League. She was the Co-chairman of the Crippled Children?s Clinic, and she served for two years as the Thomasville Follies Chairman. She was also vice president and recording secretary of the Archbold Hospital Auxiliary. While with the Auxiliary, she was active with the Pink Ladies and served as trainer for new recruits. She was the first vice president of the Glen Arven Country Club Ladies Golf Association and chairman of the May Day Tournament. She was a member of the board of directors of the American Red Cross and advisor to the Marjorie Stith Tri-Hi-Y. She was an active class parent and member of the Brookwood Boosters. She was also involved in Chi Omega Sorority. Because of her extensive community involvement, she was nominated for the national honors by the Thomasville Jaycettes and she was chosen in 1969 as one of the ?Outstanding Young Women of America.? She divorced in 1980. She worked at Neel?s Department Store from 1983 to 1999. She married Kirk Shepard in 1990. Her husband Kirk preceded her in 1992 and she is survived by her two sons, Ray and David, and her poodle MacDuff.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in her name to the John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, P.O. Box 1018, Thomasville, Ga. 31799 or the GA. Chapter Alzheimer's Association, 1512-1 Gillionville Rd., Albany, Ga. 31707.
