Memorial services for Jefferson Jeff Monroe Golden, Jr., 92, of Thomasville will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Thomasville. Mr. Golden passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Archbold Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Golden was born in Thomasville, Ga., on January 2, 1919. He was the son of the late Jefferson Monroe Golden, Sr. and Della Barwick Golden of Thomasville, Ga. Mr. Golden attended Young Harris Junior College and earned a degree in business from the University of Georgia. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June of 1941 and subsequently served in World War II until October 1945. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Lt. Commander, after serving on the destroyers USS Bache and USS Marshall. His tours of duty included the North and South Atlantic, and the North and South Pacific, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf. During his service, he was awarded eight Bronze stars.Prior to his retirement, Mr. Golden was president of Golden Brothers Company, which was co-founded by his father in 1910.
An avid golfer, Mr. Golden was a member of the Thomasville First United Methodist Church and a member of the Sue McTier Sunday School Class. He served his community as a member of the Board of Thomas County Federal Savings and Loan Association for over fifty years, nineteen of which as the Chairman of the Board. He also served on the Administrative Board of the First United Methodist Church, the Selective Service Board, and the Thomas County Board of Education.He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Louise Mitchell Golden, of Thomasville; son Jeff Golden III Mary; daughters Louise M. Golden of Atlanta, Ga.; Martha G. Foster Brad of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; Patricia G. Blanton Clayton of Peachtree City, Ga.; sister-in-law, Ethel Scott Mitchell of Valdosta, Ga.; nieces Della G. Spence Rodney of Thomasville, Ga.; Scotty Mitchell of Atlanta, Ga.; Mallette M. Faherty Tim of Portland, Or.; Linda G. Moore of Thomasville, Ga.; Nita G. Penland Jim of Winchester, Tn.; and Charlotte G. Rumble Neal of Dothan, Al.Mr. Golden was preceded in death by his two brothers, Jackson Sheffield Golden and John Archbold Golden.His nine grandchildren are Jeff Golden IV Tara of Gainesville, Ga.; Leigh Golden of Denver, Colorado; Sarah Blanton and Julie Blanton of Peachtree City, Ga.; Danielle H. Powell Matt and Katie Golden of Atlanta; and Brad Foster Jr. Krissie of Dunlap, Il., Jennifer Foster, and Christine F. Steed Sam of In. Mr. Golden also has six great-grandchildren.The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Spence at 101 Pastime Avenue, Thomasville, Ga., on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Thomasville First United Methodist Church, 425 N.
