Joan Fay Herring of Thomasville passed away on May 5, 2024 at the age of 90. She was born on November 19, 1933 in Norman Park to the late George and Christine Herring who precedes her in death.
In Joan's earlier years, she graduated from St. Angela Academy in Aiken, SC and taught in Catholic schools for several years. She later specialized in developmental and remedial reading, earning a Master's degree from Appalachian State University.
Later on, Joan established reading labs at Lakeview High School in Lakeview, SC and Sumter High School where she taught for several years. Joan returned to Thomasville to help care for her parents, where she taught at Brookwood School and at Southern Regional Technical College. She tutored many students with reading difficulties and often gave her time freely for this cause. It would be hard to measure how many lives were touched by her expertise and kindness. She had a very giving heart and loving spirit.
Joan was well known for her cakes and traditional southern cooking which she shared with everyone she could. You could count on a special dish or cake from her for your birthday. She was an avid reader and enjoyed many friendships through book clubs. She loved her yard and flowers, and honored loved ones who passed by planting a memorial tree or plant. She also enjoyed daily walks through her beautiful yard with her adored cat "Treekin".
Joan is survived by her brothers Larry Herring (Pat) of Thomasville and Michael Herring (Nancy) of Thomasville; Sisters Beth Herring Glausier (Robbie) of Thomasville and Mary Herring of Tallahassee followed by numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved so dearly.
She is preceded in death by her brothers John Woodson Herring and sister-in-law Panka and George A. Herring, Sister Virginia H. Beckham and brother-in-law Wayne, beloved nieces and nephews Joannie, David, and Dovin as well as her dear friend Hartwell Dennard.
A service to celebrate the life of Joan Herring will be held on Saturday, May 11,2024 at 2pm at the Allen and Allen Celebration of Life Chapel with a visitation from 1-2pm prior to the service.
