Joann Eloise Grady Cross

Services for JoAnn Eloise Grady Cross, are 3:00 pm, Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Allen & Allen Funeral Chapel with interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Ms. Cross died March 9, 2008 at Southern Pines Retirement Home in Thomasville. JoAnn was born July 11, 1918, at home on her parent's farm in LaGrange County, Indiana. She was the younger daughter of Clair and Anna Carlson Grady.
JoAnn attended one-room Amish schools in rural LaGrange County until her family moved to LaGrange when she was in 5th Grade. She graduated from LaGrange High School in 1936. On August 22, 1937, she married Charles H. Cross in Middlebury, Indiana. They were married for 68 years until his death on November 23, 2005. They made their home first in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and later moved back to LaGrange where they lived until moving to Thomasville, Georgia in 1979 and later to Valdosta, Georgia in 1980 to be near their daughter. In April of 2006, JoAnn moved to Southern Pines Retirement Home in Thomasville, Georgia, where she resided until her death.
JoAnn lived a full and active life. She loved watching basketball and playing Bridge above all. She participated in plays and Minstrels in the 1930's and taught tap dancing. She was an avid bowler and golfer as a young woman. JoAnn was a charter member of Eta Zeta Chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority and held all offices in the Sorority and attended many National Conventions. She was a Secretary for the LaGrange County Mental Health and Treasurer of the LaGrange County Red Cross. She was a Lutheran all of her life and was a Sunday School Teacher.
JoAnn held various jobs outside her home during her lifetime, including bookkeeper for a car dealership, jewelry store clerk, motor vehicle license office secretary, school lunchroom worker, school secretary, and secretary to the school superintendent. Her favorite job was being a mother and grandmother.
JoAnn will be missed by her son, Michael Betty Cross of Las Cruces, NM, daughter, Christine Thomas Finland of Thomasville, Grandchildren, Terri, Michelle, Megan, Javon, Jason, Jaime, and Jennifer, and Great-grandchildren, Anthony, Savannah, Sierra, Thomas, Brent, Ethan, and Mary Kate, sister, June Livengood of Richmond, Ind.
Family will receive friends at 2:00 PM before the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Ave, 7th Floor, New York, NY, 10001 and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1322 North Halsted St, Suite 201, Chicago, Il, 60622.
