Joanne Elizabeth Elder

December 28, 1953 — October 1, 2010

Joanne Elizabeth Elder was born in Niskayuna, New York on Dec. 28, 1953 to the late Max Gordon and Constance Elder, and died October 1, 2010 at her residence. She moved with her family to Miami in 1957. Before a serious accident in 1981, which left her a quadriplegic, she established a secretarial agency for lawyers in Miami. After the accident, she elected to live independently in Miami and also cared for two foster paraplegic children before moving to Thomasville. She found many faithful friends in Thomasville and felt she was home in this charming and caring place. Joanne possessed a generous spirit and was an advocate and advisor for others with paralysis who wished to live independently. She was especially caring for animals who could not speak for themselves. She always had one or two dogs with her. At the last were Mercy and Haas. Left to cherish her memory and remember her brave 28 year battle with paralysis are her mother, Constance Elder of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; brother, John Elder Judy; nephews, Max Elder and John Elder; nieces, Christina Elder and Grace Elder of Miami, Fla.; sister, Jayne Elder Fitzpatrick John of Highland Beach, Fla. Hope: Hope is a shining, crystalline white ? as from a sunlit prism- It?s glittering flies beyond reason, for Hope will urge the impossible. In those times when the prism turns and for a while eclipses that pristine sparkle, Hope is sustained for a shining return in the prism?s color spectrum- that creates it, that holds it together, that restores it- flashing red for courage, a green for perseverance, and gold as strength from a higher power.
