John Charles Derringer

John Charles “Chuck” Derringer, of Thomasville, Georgia, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, after a lengthy illness. Chuck was born on May 9, 1947, in Elyria, Ohio where he resided until his enlistment in the United States Air Force in 1965.
He spent his enlistment of four years stationed at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, in Tucson, Arizona, as a medical records technician. Upon receiving his Honorable Discharge, he remained in Tucson, Arizona, and served as a police officer where he met and married his wife of 48 years, Elizabeth Lynn, on June 25, 1972.
He and his immediate family have resided in Elyria, Ohio, to Thomasville, Georgia, during various time periods from 1974 to present. During this span, he spent 45 years, beginning in 1974 until his retirement in January 2019, working in various upper management positions in the plastics packaging industry. Wherever he traveled and whomever he met throughout his years of employment, he was not only well-respected as a businessman for his knowledge and expertise, many also called him a friend.
Chuck was a member of Thomasville First United Methodist Church, and served as an active layman within his church community as a board member and as a youth mission trip chaperone. He volunteered his very creative writing skills to writing Thomasville’s FUMC Youth’s Southern Supper scripts in the mid to late ‘90s.
He loved his community deeply and was very involved in his children’s activities from chaperoning Thomasville City Schools band activities, Thomasville Music and Drama Troupe parent volunteer, and Thomasville Area Soccer Association supporter from 1988-1999.
The most notable of his hobbies was participating in an area band called “Second Wind” where he was the lead drummer.
He is survived by his beautiful wife Elizabeth Lynn (nee Barnhart) originally of Jacksonville, Florida, his three children Kirsten Wynne Standen (David) of Covington, Georgia; Zachary Tate (Sophie) of Crawfordville, Florida; Joel “Brock” (Jennifer) of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren Jacob Cullen and Tatum Lynnly of Dayton, Ohio; Nicholas Isaac Standen and Christopher Paul Standen of Covington, Georgia; brother Daniel Carl (Jeannetta) of Elyria, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by John Junior, father (1991), Larue, Ohio; Marjorie Jane (nee Byam), mother (1999), Elyria, Ohio; and Janet Carol Plas, sister (2001), Elyria, Ohio.
He was received at Allen and Allen Funeral Home of Thomasville, Georgia. At this time, the family will not be planning hours of visitation or services due to COVID.
