A memorial service celebrating the life of John Thomas Faircloth will be held at Dawson Street Baptist Church at 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 8, 2017. His family will receive friends and family at funeral home on Friday evening from 5:00-7:00pm. Mr. Faircloth died peacefully at his Thomasville home at the age of 94 in the afternoon of Monday, July 3, 2017.
Born December 21, 1922 in Camilla, Georgia, the fourth of eight children, John Faircloth grew up in Mitchell County where he was a member of the Camilla High School Class of 1940. As an active member and president of FFA (Future Farmers of America), he gleaned leadership skills which he would use throughout his life.
Sometime after graduation, Mr. Faircloth moved to Brunswick, GA where he worked in the J.A. Jones Construction Company, a shipyard company building Liberty Ships for the WW II effort. There, he met Doris Henderson from Thomson, GA, who was also employed at the shipyard. After an eight-month courtship, they were married on November 3, 1944 and the next day, Mr. Faircloth brought his new wife to Thomasville where he had accepted a position with a food distribution company. For more than 72 years, they made their home and reared their family in this community.
Over the years, Mr. Faircloth was employed in sales and marketing by a number of food companies. In 1996, he retired as Marketing Director for Faircloth Brothers Canada Dry Bottling and Food Distributing Company.
Mr. Faircloth made his mark on this community in most profound way. His life’s passion was his non-denominational religious ministry to the inmates of the Thomas County Correctional Institute. As a young man in his 20s, he joined the efforts of Methodist George Neel, Presbyterian Ralph Norman, and fellow Baptist, Dr. Cochran to provide counseling, support, education and spiritual guidance as a lay minister. He later was named the Chaplain in charge of ministry at TCCI. For almost 70 years, Faircloth positively impacted the lives of scores of men who were influenced by his caring yet firm approach in turning their lives from incarceration to opportunity.
For his unselfish giving, Faircloth was presented proclamations honoring his service by the Thomas County Board of Commissioners and the Georgia House of Representatives. The Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce presented him with Thomas County’s Humanitarian Award in 1997.
Faircloth was a charter member of both Dawson Street Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church. He was active in all areas of church life in both congregations. Faircloth has been a life-long member of the Thomasville Camp of Gideons International, particularly interested in the collection and distribution of Bibles in the area.
Faircloth lived a life dedicated to faith and family. In addition to his wife, Doris, he is survived by daughter, Faye (Kenneth) Smith of Milton, FL; grandchildren, Kristin R. Snead, Dixie, GA; David (Jodi) Smith, Milton, FL; Amanda (Scott) Gates, Pace, FL; Meredith (Cody) Sowell, Norwich, CT; great grandchildren, Piper Smith and Kenna Smith, Milton, FL; sister Daphne (Jack) Collins, Boston, GA; sisters-in-law, Milli (M.Woody) Faircloth, Thomasville; Gene (Cleburne) Faircloth, Macon, GA; and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Trudie Mock and Albert Faircloth; daughter, Janice F. Snead, brothers M. Woody Faircloth, Cleburne Faircloth, and Emerald “E.G.” Faircloth, and sisters Laverne Redmond, Louetta Henry, and Sylvia Johnson.
The family is grateful for the devoted care and loving kindness of Dr. Charles Sanders, Archbold Home Health Services, Hospice of Southwest Georgia, Westcare, Jean Plymel, Virginia Renau, Michelle Hall and many other special friends.
