John Erich Hinrichs, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 21st at the age of 98.
A native of Schenectady, New York, John and his wife, Joe Ann, have called Thomasville home for 15 years. John is survived by his wife, Joe Ann; daughter, Susan (Mike) Galvin; two step-daughters, Dawn (Darrell) Brink and Susan Barton Dallam; granddaughter, Sarah (Shawn) Welch; two step-grandsons, Andrew and Noah Malphurs; and two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Charlotte Welch. John is preceded in death, by his late wife, Louise Hull; parents, Annie and John F. Hinrichs; and his sister, Zoe(Gordon) Fry.
John entered World War II as an enlisted Marine at the age of 21 in 1941. He read orders to Iwo Jima on open waters, arrived in the vicinity on February 17, 1945, and sustained a kamikaze attack on February 21 before going ashore on February 22, 1945 (D+3). John retired from the Marines in 1961 with the rank of Captain.
John received his degree in Electrical Engineering from Union College, New York in 1950. He was immediately hired by General Electric, where he spent thirty-three years traveling internationally growing and leading their Large Motor Department.
His extensive worldwide business travels allowed John to attend Rotary meetings in every continent but Antarctica. John served as President for a term with the Scotia Rotary Club and then District Governor of Rotary International. John was highly active in the local Rotary and Rotary International initiatives for over six decades. Having moved to Thomasville in 2003, John became an active member here and was awarded a Lifetime Service Award by the Thomasville Rotary Club in 2013.
John and Joe Ann are members of the loving church body of First Baptist Church Thomasville.
Memorial services will be held at 2PM, Friday, June 8th, 2018 at First Baptist Church Chapel.
