John Lee Mattox, Jr., was born to John, Sr., and Oneida Mattox in Thomasville, Georgia. He was the third of five children. He graduated from Thomasville High School where he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was known as the "hometown hero." After graduating in 1962 he was drafted into the US Army and served two years in Germany where he also played football. (John LOVED football!) Upon his return to the United States he married Judy Carter and they had two daughters, Lisa and Missy.
John worked at Colonial Warehouse and Jax Food Center for several years before moving into the freight brokerage business. After a time he began his own brokerage business called M & R Transport, which he owned for fifteen years. He also worked for G & G Gopher courier service for five years before retiring.
Though John was a very private man, he desired to live every day to its fullest. He worked hard, determined to succeed with whatever endeavor he was engaged. He played hard-football, gambling, and fishing. He had no patience with anyone who let a fish get away. And he loved to dance-he was quite good at it. John also loved his family hard with cookouts, fishing, and football.
At the end of his life he found comfort in John 3:16, professing his belief in God and God's son, Jesus Christ. We look forward to seeing John again in Heaven.
John is survived by his two daughters Judith Lisa Mattox and Melissa Lee Mattox, two granddaughters Bianca Rose Suter and Bailee Victoria Williams, and two great grandsons Jaxson Hobbs and Bentley Scarbrough. He is also survived by his two sisters Annette Hurst and Darla Bentley, as well as two brothers Charles Mattox (Diane) and Frank Mattox (Maura). In addition, much appreciation is expressed to cousins Nat and Sherri Carter, Donna Carter, Susan Carter, Buck Carter, Natalie and Mattison Dunaway, Kim and Kenny Smith, and Jay and Brandi Smith.
