John Walton Richards, Sr.

August 23, 1960 — July 24, 2024

Beloved husband, father, and grandfather John Walton Richards, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home in Boston, Georgia, at dawn on July 24th, 2024.

John was born on August 23rd, 1960 in Rome, Georgia. He was the third of three children born to James and Meg Richards. John’s family moved from Rome to Thomasville, Georgia in 1963, and he graduated from Thomasville High School in 1978.

Soon after, John began what would become a long, successful career in local law enforcement. He started at the County Farm in 1982, and later joined the Thomas County Sheriff’s Department in 1985. John would remain with the department until 2009.

John found his calling in law enforcement, and this was reflected in his achievements. Less than a year after joining the department, John was promoted to investigator, making him the youngest investigator in the county’s history. Throughout his career, John led drug task forces and investigated several high-profile criminal cases. He finished his career in law enforcement as Captain and Chief of Operations of the Thomas County Sheriff’s Department, proud to have served his community for twenty-seven years.

In July of 2009, John married his beloved wife and best friend, Cindy Carson Richards of Boston. They loved spending time together and were truly each other’s closest companion. Their time together was also made memorable by their beloved pets, the late Laurie Darlin’ and Puddy Cat, and Dolly, their one-year-old Labrador mix.

Besides enjoying time with Cindy, John loved golfing, fishing, going to the beach, and UGA football.
Among the many highlights and accomplishments of his life, what made John proudest of all was his three children. Nothing brought him greater reward than being the father of John Jr., Paige, and Dalton.

John was preceded in death by his father, James A. Richards, Jr.; mother Meg Richards Myers; and brother, James A. Richards, III. Survivors include his wife Cindy; children John W. Richards Jr., Dalton McQueen, and Paige Richards Davison (Robert); grandsons John W. Richards III and Kipp Richards; and sister, Mary Marshall McGalliard.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 28th at 2 p.m. at Boston Baptist Church. The family will accept visitors at the Boston Community Center following a brief, private graveside service.
Serving as pallbearers are Dave Malcom, David Hufstetler, David Breese, David Melton, Austin Taylor, Chuck Weaver, and Victor Seay.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of Boston Cemetery at P.O. Box 147, Boston, Ga. 31626.
