Johnnie Lamon Womble

Services for Johnnie Lamon Womble, 91 of Thomasville will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, August 12 at Dawson Street Baptist Church. Rev. Lee Waller will officiate and interment will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Womble was born December 18, 1920, in Grady County, Georgia, a son of the late Walter and Jennie Womble. He graduated from Whigham High School in 1940 and attended Freeman Business School in Albany, Georgia. During World War II he served his country with the 401st Bombardment Group stationed at Deenthrope, England. He was the ball turret gunner on a B17 flying fortress. On May 28, 1944, his plane was shot down over Dessau, Germany. Seven of the ten crew members survived. He spent eleven months and one day in a German prison camp before being liberated by Patten's armored division. He was awarded several decorations including the Purple Heart. After his discharge from the air Force, Johnnie moved to Thomasville and lived there the rest of his life. He retired from the Georgia Department of Labor in 1986 after working there 30 years. He was a member of Dawson Street Baptist Church where he attended the Grady Burgess Sunday School class. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #31. On December 8, 1967, Johnnie married Ann Ryan Pafford Womble who survives him. Other survivors include; son and daughter-in-law Stan and Leigh Womble, daughter and son-in law Carla and Scott Barrow, grandchildren; Sterling, Stuart, and Seth Womble and Elizabeth Barrow; great granddaughter, Abbi Womble. Other survivors include step-daughter and son-in-law, Mary Pafford Jackson and Lee Jackson and family, step-daughter Sheri Pafford Weeks and family, and several loving first cousins. Preceding him in death include his parents, sisters; Nettie Harrison and Hettie Lee Ulm, brothers; Raymond, Hershell and Marvin Womble. Memorials may be made to World Hunger through Dawson Street Baptist Church, 1025 North Dawson Street, Thomasville, Georgia 31792. The family will receive friends 5-7 pm, Saturday at the funeral home.
