Services for Joyce Christine Oliver Heald of Thomasville are at 11:00AM on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at Dawson Street Baptist Church where she was a member. Rev. Lee Waller will officiate with interment in Fredonia Church Cemetery. Mrs. Heald died March 30, 2003 at Emory University Hospital in Altanta, GA. Born January 27, 1939 in Cook Co., GA., she was the daughter of the late Paul Harmon and Bessie Dunn Oliver. She was married to the late Charles Keller Heald. Mrs. Heald retired as Director of Nursing from Archbold Memorial Hospital in 2001. During her 40 year nursing career she helped establish the first Intensive Coronary Care Unit and served as the first head Nurse of that area. She helped to organize and serve as director of the Cardiovascular Center and served as nurse in charge of weekly cardiac clinics. She preformed the first Echocardiography at Archbold and organized and taught numerous cardiac classes for nurses in Southwest Georgia. She taught the first Cardiac Techitian course for Southwest Georgia EMTS and was an instructor of the first ACLS class taught at Archbold. She was Valedictorian at Coolidge High School, she received a Diploma Nursing degree at Macon University Hospital and received a BSN in Nursing and Masters in Nursing Administration at Valdosta State University. She was a faithful member of Dawson Street Baptist Church where she was a teacher for the Victory Sunday School Class. She was a past president of womens club, past board member of the American Heart Association and Regional Faculty member of the AHA. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Johnny Kavouklis and Connie and Tommy Maggitas both of Thomasville; brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Joyce Oliver of Thomasville, sister and brother-in-law, Polly and Johnny Estes of Senoia, GA., brother and sister-in-law, James and Diana Oliver of Thomasville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Malcom and Norma Duren of Thomasville; grandchildren, Olivia Kavouklis, Elaina Kavouklis, Alisha Kavouklis, Charles Maggitas and Christina Maggitas and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Memorials may be made to Dawson Street Baptist Church, 1025 N. Dawson Street, Thomasville, GA., 31792 or the American Heart Association, c/o Vicki Lutes, P.O. Box 1999, Thomasville, Ga 31799.
