The world lost an extraordinary man Monday, August 22 as Julian Davis "Bird" McBride, Jr. passed away to be with the Lord, lost loved ones and his beloved dogs Brewster and Lucy. The nickname Bird was coined during his first-grade year. Robert Jinright gave him the nickname referencing a birddog because as a young boy, he would tag along with the older kids. Known as Bird and JD by most, and Poppie to his adoring grandchildren he could captivate an audience with his storytelling prowess and possessed a personality that filled a room with charisma and light. His sense of humor, quick wit, and honesty left a trail of laughter in his wake. He was a graduate of both Thomasville High School and North Georgia Military College and served his country in the Army. Professionally, he made his mark in the produce industry for over 51 years farming and brokering watermelons, in addition to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in Georgia and Florida, and owned and operated Southern Pecan Company. When he wasn't working, he could be found in the woods, on the water, or on the green as he loved hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Anyone will tell you; he always knew where to find the fish. He was a generous man who loved the Lord and a man of his word. His family will attest to his thoughtful advice and while he could spin a great story, he was an incredible listener and problem solver. To many (especially his family) he was a giant. He told many that he had lived an amazing life and all who knew him, know he never wasted a single day of it. His story started and ended in Thomasville and his departure will forever leave a void for the countless friends and family in the community. He is survived by his wife and the love of his life Debbie McBride, son Julian "Dave" McBride III, daughter Gayla Jacquin and son-in-law JJ Jacquin, stepson Jay Lowe and daughter-in-law Lisa Lowe, grandchildren Julian McBride IV, Evan McBride, Harper Jacquin, Morgan Lowe VanLandingham (Dean), Jace Lowe, and his loving dogs Jag and Bandit. May he rest in peace and never be forgotten.
Graveside service will be held at 10 AM Thursday, August 25, 2022, at Laurel Hill Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of Life following the Graveside at 11 AM at The Plaza. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Thomasville Humane Society and/or Thomasville YMCA, two organizations close to his heart.
