Julius Edward Bailey, Jr., a devoted husband, respected pharmacist, and cherished member of his community, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service, kindness, and quiet humor.
Born December 10, 1936, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, Ed was the son of Julius and Miriam (Betts) Bailey.
Born with a natural wit that endeared him to all who knew him, Ed was proudly voted "Wittiest" among his senior class upon graduating from Fitzgerald High School in 1956-a trait he carried with him throughout his life, bringing smiles to friends, family, and patients alike.
He continued his education at the University of Georgia, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1960. Soon after, in 1961, Edward married his sweetheart since 4th grade, Dolores Carolyn Alligood, beginning a loving union that would span decades. She preceded him in death in 2018.
Edward served his country honorably in the Army Reserves, demonstrating the same sense of duty and commitment that would define his professional and personal life.
A beloved pharmacist, Edward dedicated his career to caring for others. He was the proud owner of Kennerly's Prescription Center in Tallahassee, Florida, and Lewis Drug Company in Pelham, Georgia, where he became a trusted figure in both communities. Later in his career, he continued serving patients at Winn-Dixie and Harvey's Pharmacies in Thomasville, always offering not just prescriptions, but compassion, wisdom, and a friendly word.
His contributions extended beyond his profession. While in Pelham, Ed was honored by Rotary International as a Paul Harris Fellow reflecting his commitment to service and community involvement. He and Dee were members of Thomasville First Methodist Church.
Edward will be remembered for his sharp sense of humor, his steady dedication to helping others, and the deep love he held for his family. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his work, his friendships, and his unwavering kindness.
He is survived by three daughters, Melanie Hasty (Mark), Susan Harvard (Jay), and Beth Deese (Rodney). Seven grandchildren who adored their GrandEd include Bailey Harvard Greer (Brent), Chase Harvard (Holly), Kinsey Truman Campbell (Ian), Caroline Deese, Emily Deese Foster (Philip), Justin Hasty (Chelsea), and Kelly Hasty Hand (Lucas). He also had nine precious great-grandchildren. Nephews who were more like sons to "Uncle Edward" are Ted Lavender and David Lavender. "Eddie" was also especially close to his nieces Gwen Bekemyer and Linda Abernethy. All of their children were very special to Edward.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dee, his sister LaNelle Lasseter, his sister-in-law Beverly Lavender, and an infant brother John.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Bailey at Allen & Allen Funeral Home in Thomasville at 1:00, Friday, March 27, with Rev. Scott Stanfill officiating. A visitation will precede that at noon. Interment will take place at 4:00 that afternoon at Evergreen cemetery in Fitzgerald. Memorials in his honor may be sent to First Methodist Church, 425 N. Broad St., Thomasville, GA 31792.
