Funeral services for Katie Lou (Kate) Peacock Beckham of Thomasville, Georgia will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Allen & Allen Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pastor Kirk Beckham, Rev. Jean Watson and Dr. Jimmy Clanton will officiate.
Mrs. Beckham, age 98, was born in Geneva County, Alabama on July 5, 1917 to the late James Lockard and Flossie Mae Peacock. She was a graduate of Geneva High School, Hartford, Alabama. On May 5, 1939 she graduated from the Moody Hospital Training School, Dothan, Alabama with a degree in nursing.
After her college graduation, Mrs. Beckham began her long career as a Registered Nurse working briefly at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and then Gallagher Hospital in Washington, DC. She moved to Thomasville, GA in 1939 to work at Archbold Memorial Hospital. On July 25, 1941 she married James Newkirk (Kirk) Beckham of Thomas County, GA. He preceded her in death in June, 1974.
During her career as a Registered Nurse, Mrs. Beckham was employed at Archbold Memorial Hospital and in the office of Dr. Mervin Wine. She spent the last several years of her career at Southwestern State Hospital where she was the Night Nurse Supervisor. Following her retirement, Mrs. Beckham enjoyed doing volunteer work in the community. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church until her health prevented her from participating. Mrs. Beckham particularly enjoyed her volunteer work as a Docent for the Thomas County Historical Society. She was named Docent of the Year in 1991.
Mrs. Beckham is survived by sons Kirk Beckham and George Beckham, Thomasville, Georgia and John Beckham and wife Teresa, Athens, Georgia; daughters Carole Beckham, Tallahassee, Florida and Kathy Beckham Mims and husband, Clayton, Leesburg, Georgia; grandchildren Kirk D. Beckham and wife Mandy, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida and Katie Beckham, Thomasville, Georgia; and great-grandchildren Matthew and Lola Kate Beckham. She is also survived by five step-grandchildren, eleven step great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Beckham was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma P. Watson and brother, James Lockard Peacock.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Outreach Center of Albany, 314 North Jefferson St, Albany, Georgia 31701. The family will receive friends 5-7PM, Friday, August 14, 2015 at Allen & Allen Funeral Home.
