Elton was born in San Jose, California. He and his wife, Catherine, moved to Thomasville in 1987. He was a Telecommunications Engineer with the Florida Public Service Commission in Tallahassee, Florida, and retired in 2006. He was married to Catherine for 31 years. He did not have any children. He had four brothers whom all preceded him in death.
