Services for Leonard T. “Skip” Nobles will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Thomasville, Ga, with Howard Floyd officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Nobles passed away on February 23, 2022, at Woodleaf Senior Care. He was born on August 13, 1931, to James and Sadie Nobles in Covington, Va. On July 7, 1962, in Augusta, he married Betty Carswell Nobles, who survives. Mr. Nobles served in the United States Air Force from 1951 until 1955 where he was commissioned as Lieutenant. He was trained as a fighter pilot, and flew an F86D Sabre Jet, a T-6, a T-33, and a DC-3. He graduated from Newberry College in 1957 where he studied ethics and philosophy, he then went on to attend the University of Georgia, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. Skip worked for Gracewood State School and Hospital, in Augusta, from 1957 until 1973. He transferred to Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville as Assistant Superintendent of Administration in November of 1973 and retired from there in October of 1988. Skip was a member of First Baptist Church of Thomasville where he was also a member of the adult choir. He assisted with the youth choir, was a member of the handbell choir, their international mission trips, and he was involved in many other church activities. Skip enjoyed playing golf, making model airplanes, solving crossword puzzles, reading the Bible, and the newspaper. He also enjoyed watching the news, taking pictures, and he was interested in anything that had to do with airplanes. Skip was preceded in death by his parents, James and Sadie Nobles, and his son Len Nobles. He is survived by his daughters, Sherri Cain (Mark) of Thomasville, Ga; Jill Mechling (Ralph) of Clinton, SC; Beth Powell of Columbia, SC; his son James Nobles (Cheryl) of Columbia, SC; and eight grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 25, 2022, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, at Allen & Allen Celebration of Life Chapel.
