Lois Inez Murphy White

February 5, 1911 — April 19, 2002

Lois Inez Murphy White, 91, long-time Thomas County resident, died Friday at Southern Pines Retirement Center. Services will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Allen & Allen Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rutledge E. Courtney and the Rev. Charles Neely officiating. Private burial will follow. Mrs. White was born in Colquitt County on February 5, 1911. She grew up in Coolidge, where she played varsity basketball and belonged to the Memorial Baptist Church. She married Aubrey White, who died in 1961, on December 28, 1929. Before her retirement Mrs. White had worked at Finney General Hospital managing an office during World War II. She later worked for U.S. Public Health Service, the Veterans Administration Hospital, and her brother's veterinary hospital in Tampa. ''Mrs White was a well-loved lady who had impeccable taste and was known for her generosity,'' a friend said. Her concern for others was shown often, including the time on the White farm, when no doctor was available, she delievered a neighbor's baby. She was also a woman of courage. Some years ago, while living in Tampa, she scared off three burglars from her neighbor lady's front porch by firing her pistol in the middle of the night. She was a good writer. Before health problems made writing difficult, she wrote insightful letters with vivid details. Mrs. White is remembered as a person with a mind of her own who often sided with the underdog. She loved her friends and family and enjoyed cooking for them. She especially liked babysitting with her grandchildren, when they were younger, and visiting with her great grandchildren. Mrs. White was the daughter of the late Luther and Volena Murphy. She is survived by her son, Doyle White of Coolidge, and her daughter, Glenda and husband Mickey Logue of Auburn, Alabama. Her four grandchildren are Amy and husband Don Rockwell of Thomasville, and Mark White of Coolidge, Steve Logue of Auburn, and Kyle and his wife Ruth Ann Logue of Ann Harbor, Michigan. Her great-grandchildren are Gregg, Will, and Elizabeth Rockwell, and Hannah, Molly, Thomas Murphy, and Caroline Logue. Her sisters and brothers are Nadine Borom of Thomasville, Donita Turner of Murphy, Marie Megahee deceased, Hope Baker of Coolidge, L.P. and wife Dot Murphy of Tampa, and Lewis Murphy of Vero Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a contribution to Hospice of Southwest Georgia, East.
