Funeral services for Lota Adams Long, 99, of Boston, will be held Monday, March 6, 2017, at 3:00 PM at Summerhill Baptist Church, Boston, Georgia, where she was a member for over 60 years. The Rev. Mitch Clements will officiate, and internment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Long passed away Friday, March 3, at Legacy Village, Moultrie, Georgia.
She was born January 10, 1918, in rural Mitchell County, Georgia, to the late James Eli Adams and Jo Ella Cooper Adams. She and her twin sister, Lora, weighed only 2 1/2 pounds each at birth. Bricks from the fire place were wrapped in blankets and put in the bed with them to help keep them warm. They were delivered by their great uncle, Dr. Hollingsworth. When their Grandmother Cooper told him that she was going to make clothes for them out of flannel, he told her that she was just wasting her time because they were not going to live.
But, live they did; Lora until 1day prior to her 80th birthday, and Lota for 99 years.
Lota Adams married Oscar Long on Christmas Eve, 1947, at the court house in Thomasville, Georgia. They were married until his death on August 6, 1997. She continued to live on their farm until the summer of 2016. She will be fondly remembered by many who sat in her porch swing and visited, ate her famous fried chicken, or enjoyed her beautiful flowers. She was kind to all and was the epitome of a Christian lady. She was known as Mama to her children, Aunt Lota to her extended family & Church family, Mrs. Lota by her friends at Legacy Village, and MeMaw to her beloved Grand Children and Great Grand Children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sisters: Mary A. Welch, Willie L. Adams, Ruth A. Joiner, Vera A. Matthews, Lora A. Nesmith, Christine A. Bulloch, and Ann A. Sculley.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law: Patricia L. Griffin and husband, Charlie, of Thomasville, and Jeanie L. Crittenden and husband, Mark, of Boston; grandsons Heath Carnline (Janelle), Trey Griffin (Elexis), Brent Griffin, and Jerrod Shealey; great grandchildren: Blake Carnline, Ela Griffin, Wil Griffin, Jodi & Josh DiGiammarino.
Honorary pallbearers are Warner NeSmith, Sonny Sculley, Bobby Wind, Melvin Mercer, Royce Mercer, and Mike Barnes. Pallbearers are Heath Carnline, Trey Griffin, Brent Griffin, and Jerrod Shealey. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the funeral home. Floral tributes will be accepted, or donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
