Lucile Tidwell Chambers

January 1, 1915 — March 9, 2009

For ninety-four years this world has been a better place because of the life of Mrs. Edwin H. Chambers, Sr. Lucile Tidwell. Because of her love for her Lord, her family, and friends she has been a beautiful Christian example to many, many people with whom she has come in contact! One of her newest friends said of her, "Mrs. Chambers is absolutely the sweetest person I have ever known in all of my life". Mrs. Chambers died March 9, 2009 at her residence with her four children by her side.
Lucile Tidwell Chambers was born January 1, 1915 to John Henry and Beatrice Tidwell of Opelika, Alabama. Lucile was one of eight children and her seven brothers and sisters have all preceded her in death. Her mother told her she was born loving children and she was always helping with her younger siblings and taking care of her neighborhood's babies and children. Lucile was a very good athlete and loved all sports. She graduated Valedictorian from Opelika High School; but was unable to accept her college scholarship because her daddy died when she was 17 years old, and she felt she should go to work and help her Mother in taking care of their family. Lucile worked for the Opelika Daily News for 10 years.

During a visit to one of her sister's home, she met her future husband Edwin H. Chambers, Sr. while attending a church revival. After several years of dating Edwin and Lucile became engaged and were to have a June wedding. However, Edwin was going to be deployed to Africa during WWII and the wedding was moved to April 5, 1942 Easter Sunday. Edwin and Lucile shared nearly 57 years together before his Homegoing Feb.1, 1999.
God blessed their marriage with four children who Lucile has always said were spoiled with love but not spoiled rotten. Those four children are Edwin H. Chambers, Jr., Bonnie Chambers Rockett, John Marion Chambers, and Elizabeth Suzanne Chambers Sayers.
Lucile has always been very involved in her children's lives. She devoted all of her time in making her home a happy home for her wonderful husband and children. She served and worked in the schools where her children attended. She has been a faithful member of First Baptist Church for 60 years. Lucile worked in the nursery for over 60 years, having started when she was only 15 years old, and has been told that God is going to make her in charge of the nursery in Heaven. She taught beginners in Sunday School, Training Union, and Sunbeams.
Lucile has spread her love among many "adopted" children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved everyone and therefore everyone loved her. She has lived a life of kindness, graciousness, compassion, and love. Lucile was also an avid Braves fan, and in addition to supporting them, she enjoyed watching tennis, basketball and golf. She began watching sports on TV with her husband Edwin many years ago. Lucile also loved music and one of her favorite things to do was to have her family sing whenever they were together.
In addition to her four children, Lucile is survived by her children by marriage Linda Hatten Chambers, Hugh Rockett, Kathy Ferrell Chambers, and Chuck Sayers. Grandchildren are Robbins and Brooke Chambers, David and Stephanie Chambers, Jonathan and Wendy Rockett, Marion Chambers, Amelia Chambers, Andy Sayers, Dan and Mendy Sayers Castle. Her latest loves were her great-grands: Daniel and Sara Chambers, Ana Chambers, Ely and Braxton Castle, Justice Widener, Angel and Hope Michaels, and baby Rockett due August 26th. Lucile is also survived by many sister and brother-in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews, many special friends, chosen daughter Marie Chastain Chambers, and loving caregiver and friend of many years, Shirley Weaver Jackson. Mrs. Chambers was preceded in death by twin grand-daughters, Anna Elizabeth and Jessica Erin Chambers.

The celebration of her Homegoing will be held at First Baptist Church Chapel on Thursday, March 12th at 4:00 p.m. Dr. Milton C. Gardner, Rev. Hugh Rockett, and Rev. Chuck Sayers will officiate. Pallbearers will be grandsons Robbins and David Chambers and Jonathan Rockett, John and Jesse Booth, and Jimmy Clanton. The visitation will be at Allen and Allen Funeral Home Wednesday, March 11th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
