Community leader Margaret Clisby Powell Flowers died the 22nd of December, 2003, at her home after a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Margaret McKay Powell and William John Powell, both prominent local citizens.
A native of Thomasville, Mrs. Flowers was graduated from Thomasville High School and Agnes Scott College. She was a founding member of the Thomasville Cultural Center, serving as one of the earliest Presidents of its Board of Trustees. She also served as President of the Thomas County Historical Society. Mrs. Flowers was instrumental in the founding of Brookwood School and served on its Board of Trustees. In 1981, she was honored with "Women of the Year" for Thomas County. She was chairman of the Thomasville Town Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and was quite active in the Rambler Rose Garden Club.
A lifelong active member of the First Presbyterian Church, she served on local, regional, and national church committees, and became the first woman deacon of the local church. For the past two years she chaired the writing committee to bring the history of the church up to date. In November the completed history, ?Saints and Sinners Vol. II?, was published and presented for the 150th anniversary of the local church.
Survivors include Langdon Strong Flowers, her husband of nearly sixty years, and children, Peggy and Scott Rich, Langdon and Mandy Flowers, Libba Flowers, Dorothy and Ron Swinson and Jay and Kim Flowers. The grandchildren include Charnie and Max Beverly, Scott and Shayna Rich, Margaret Rich, Maggie and Jimmy Clifton, Lang and Sandy Flowers, Craig Flowers, Boyd McKinney, Celeste and Mose Bracey, Cara McKinney, Sarah Swinson, Julie Swinson, Hayley Swinson, Ross Swinson, Jack Flowers, Davis Flowers, Chase Flowers and Hampton Flowers. Four great-grand children are Max Beverly, Rich Beverly, Anne Clifton and Clara Clifton. Mrs. Flowers is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Harry T. Jones, Jr. Celetta Powell Jones of Thomasville and Mrs. Frank T. Lemmon Georgia Powell Lemmon of Davidson, NC.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, December 24, at the First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the First Presbyterian Church Playground Fund in memory of Mrs. Flowers. Visitors may sign the online guest register at
