Marion Pardee Harne

Graveside services for Marion Elizabeth Pardee Harne of Alexandria, VA, are at 4:00 pm, Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Harne died May 24, 2007 at Lynne House, Alexandria, VA. Born February 19, 1913, in Thomasville, she was the daughter of the late Mr. Robert Smith Pardee and Marion Balfour Pardee. Maternal grandparents were the late Mr. & Mrs. Robert Charles Balfour, and paternal grandparents were the late Mr. & Mrs. William A. Pardee. She graduated from Thomasville Schools and later attended The Georgia State Womans College at Valdosta, where she received her AB degree. After receiving her degree, she held a position in Atlanta before accepting a job with Yale University Library in New Haven, CT. After some years there she moved to New York City where she was the private secretary to the president of American Airlines. On August 11, 1945, she married John Lee Harne, Jr., Lt. Commander United States Naval Reserve, in Memphis TN., who precedes her in death. Upon her husband?s discharge from the Navy, they lived in Dayton, OH, before moving to Alexandria, VA, where she worked serving as secretary to the office of Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. She held that position until she retired. Upon her retirement, she and friends enjoyed world travel, and she always looked forward to Christmas visits with family in Thomasville continuing through Christmas, 2006. During her early years in Thomasville, she and her family were members of St. Thomas Episcopal Church; however, in early adulthood she joined First Church of Christ Scientist, becoming a reader and serving on the board of the mother church in Boston, MA. She remained a devout member of her faith all her life. Local survivors include Dr. & Mrs. John Thomas King, Jr., Dr. & Mrs. William Balfour King, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Charles Balfour III, Mr. & Mrs. Bolling Jones III, and their families: Mr. & Mrs. Robert W. Balfour, Mr. & Mrs. David Balfour, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Balfour, Mr. & Mrs. Bolling Jones IV, and Mr. & Mrs. Micajah Jones. Out-of-town families are Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Crabtree, of Alexandria, Va.; Ms. Virginia Balfour, of Ashville, N.C.; Mr. & Mrs. William Floyd, of Atlanta, Mr. & Mrs. George Wrigley, of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Mr. & Mrs. W. Michael King, of Atlanta, Ms. Marianne King Wright, of Orlando, FL.; Mr. Mark C. King, of Athens, and Mr. & Mrs. Robert T. King of Zebulon, Ga.
