Mary Amarintha Ama Chastain Tanner
Services for Mary Amarintha Ama Chastain Tanner, 95, of Thomasville, are at 11:00AM on Monday, January 12, 2009 at Allen & Allen Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Randy Blow and the Rev. Jerry Lancaster will officiate and interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery on 11th Street. Pallbearers are William Livingston, Alan Pitman, Oliver McAleer, Willy Reisgo, Andrew Mallard and Rollins Stewart. Mrs. Tanner died Friday, Jan. 9 at Glen Mor Nursing Home. Born March 8, 1913, in Thomas County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. Chastain of Thomasville and Henrietta Nesbitt Chastain of Pavo. She was married, in Brunswick, to Otis L. Tanner who preceded her in death in 1979. She was a 1931 graduate of Thomasville High School. She attended Milledgeville College, where she majored in Home Economics. She attended Primitive Baptist Church, in Miami, Fla. and Thomasville, where she was a member for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star since 1947 and the Rose City Travel Club since 1974. Mrs. Tanner was a loving wife, mother and homemaker since 1934. During the war, she worked at Merrill Stephens in Jacksonville, Fla. She temporarily took in children and families displaced by the war. Survivors include daughters, Faye Tanner Pitman and husband Wayne of Thomasville and Margaret Tanner McAleer and husband Joseph of Lake Harmony, Penn.; grandchildren, Elizabeth P. Livingston of Tallahassee, Fla., Albert John "Jack" Pitman and wife Diane of Pembroke Pines, Fla., Oliver McAleer of Lansdale, Penn., Mendy M. Meriwether and husband Andrew of Havertown, Penn.; great-grandchildren, William A. Livingston of Tallahassee, Fla. and Sarah A. Livingston of Malverne, N.Y., Alan Pitman and wife Candy of West Palm Beach, Fla., Kimberly P. Reisgo and husband Willy of Pembroke Pines, Fla. Riley Meriwether and Paige Meriwether; great-great grandchildren, Cooper Pitman, Payton Pitman, Tyler Reisgo, Ashley Reisgo, Nathan McAleer; niece, Elaine Hall; nephew, Andrew Mallard; brothers-in-law, Donald Tanner, Herman Tanner, Benny Tanner, Robert Tanner and Marvin Tanner of Americus; sister-in-law, Marge T. Austin of Americus. She was preceded in death by a sister, Malita Mallard and brother, J. T. Chastain. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 5-7:00PM.
