Services for Mary C. Grubbs, 81, of Thomasville are at 4:00PM on Monday, May 12, 2008 at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Dan Spencer and Father Frederick Buechner will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Grubbs died May 9, 2008 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born September 2, 1926 in Thomasville she was the daughter of the late Harvey L. and Gladys Stanaland Chastain. She was married to Dr. Clarence B. Grubbs, Jr. who preceded her in death. Mrs. Grubbs earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Georgia and her masters at Florida State University. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was retired from the Thomasville City School System. She taught 5th grade for many years at Eastside School and was principal at Harper Elementary School. After retirement she was Executive Director of United Way for several years and she also worked for the Welcome Center for a number of years. Mrs. Grubbs was a charter member of the Sunrise Kiwanis, taught The Grubbs/Donovan Sunday School Class, was the Chamber of Commerce Women of the Year in 1970, an Olympic Torch bearer in 1996, Grand Marshall for the 2008 Rose Show Parade, Thomasville-Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee and a Thomasville-Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame Board Member. Mrs. Grubbs was a teacher, coach, mother and mentor to many and was an extraordinary person that loved her family, her church and her community. She was an avid fan of all sports, especially the Atlanta Braves. During the season she did a short radio spot on WPAX with post game analysis. Survivors include son, C. B. "Scooter" Grubbs, III and daughter-in-law, Kim Grubbs of Thomasville, grandchildren, Lauren Grubbs and Walker Grubbs, sister, Martha "Duchess" Donovan , niece, Susan Brown both of Thomasville, nephew, Jim Haslam and Regina of Canton, GA and niece Ellen Van Alstine of Thomasville.
