Graveside services for Mary Cartledge Melvin, 84, of Thomasville, are at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Leary Cemetery in Leary, Ga. The Rev. Tommy Newberry will officiate. Ms. Melvin died April 16, 2009 at Southern Pines Retirement Community. Born August 12, 1924, in Leary, she was the daughter of the late Ben and Lillian Melvin. She graduated from Valdosta State University with a 4 year Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Ms. Melvin was retired from foreign services, where she was a personal officer for the Embassy of the United States of America, in which she served, Argentina, Germany, Indonesia, Nigeria, The Ivory Coast, Mexico, among others. Survivors include a brother, Kenneth Carson Melvin of Butler, Ala.; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Benjamin Terrell Melvin, Jr., Clayton Eugene Melvin and George Shannon Melvin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Southern Pines Retirement Community Beacon Neighborhood, 423 Covington Avenue, Thomasville, GA. 31792.
