Maxine High Womble, age 87 of Birmingham, Ala. and Tallahassee, Fla., passed away from natural causes December 7, 2017 in Birmingham.
Born in Port Arthur, Tex. in 1930, Maxine was a loving sister, mother, friend and grandmother. She was a 1946 graduate of Leon High School and over the years was employed as a secretary and administrative assistant by the Florida Department of Education. She also held other state posts, in addition to owning and operating Dixie Chemical Company in Tallahassee.
Through a number of personal hardships, she was known as a kind, patient and gentle person. She liberally used her gifts as a great listener with an open and loving heart. Through her actions, Maxine taught her children empathy and kindness. One of her proudest accomplishments was encouraging and supporting her three oldest children to complete college, including several advanced degrees.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leah Gandy Pittman and William Gilford High; her sister, Uldean Pittman; her daughter, Janice; her son, Jeffery and her husband, Fred F. Womble. She is survived by her daughter, Jeana U. Womble and her spouse, Cornelia Yarbrough, of Baton Rouge, La.; her son, Ken and his spouse, Sandy, of Loveland, Col., and Greg Womble, of Birmingham, Ala. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Lily McLemore Womble of New York City, NY and Henry McNeil Womble of Auburn, Ala.
Friends are invited to attend visitation on Wednesday, December 13 at 10:00 a.m. at East Hill Baptist Church, 912 Miccosukee Rd. in Tallahassee. A brief memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to a charity of your choice.
