Melvin Ladon "Don" Hill, Sr

Services for Melvin LaDon Don Hill, Sr., 83 of Thomasville will be held at 2 pm, Tuesday, April 17 at Dawson Street United Methodist Church. Rev. Jimmy Clanton and Rev. Betty Lou Miller will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Hill passed away April 15, 2012 at Archbold Hospital. Born February 23, 1929 in Colquitt, Ga., he was the son of the late Arthur James Hill and Minnie Lee Rachel Hill. On December 9, 1953 he married Maxine Woodham Hill who survives. He graduated from Miller County High School then enlisted in the US Army and served from October of 1950 to October of 1952 when he was injured during the Korean War. He received the Bronze Service Star; the Army Occupation Medal; Japan, Korean Service Medal; Combat INF Badge and the Purple Heart. He then went to business school in Thomasville following his discharge from the Army and obtained a degree in accounting. He began his working career with Mr. Ellis Davis in Thomasville in 1953 and worked with the same business, which is now known as Fletcher and Associates, until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled Veterans, the American Quarter Horse Assoc and the Georgia-Florida Field Trial Assoc. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising and riding horses and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His grandchildren were the light of his life and they all knew how much he loved them. He was known to them and many others in the community as "Daddy Don". Other survivors include his children, Faye Hill Culpepper and her husband Jerry of Marietta, Susan Hill Griffin of Thomasville; grandchildren, Michael Lee Hill of Thomasville, Staff Sgt William Christopher Culpepper of Charleston, SC, Lindsay Michelle Culpepper of Statesboro and Kameron LaDonna Griffin of Thomasville; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Jo Hill Salley of Springfield, SC, Dot Hill McQuaig of Donalsonville, and Carolyn Hill Rentz of Newton. He was preceded in death by son, Melvin LaDon Hill, Jr., brothers, James Mitchell Hill, David Lamar Hill and sister, Annie Lee Barnes. The family will receive friends 5-7 pm.
