Michael Roy Singletary

December 19, 1937 — September 22, 2014

Michael Roy Singletary died peacefully on September 22, 2014 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. He was born in Thomasville, Georgia on December 19, 1937 and spent most of his life in the town that he loved. His parents were William Ross Singletary and Pauline Braswell Singletary of Ochlocknee and Thomasville, respectively.

He attended Thomasville High School and was graduated in 1956 from Georgia Military Academy (now Woodward Academy) in College Park, Georgia, where he escorted his future wife, Carol, to the military prom. He later attended North Georgia College and Valdosta State College.

He loved to regale friends with his experience as an eighteen year old on a trip to Havana, Cuba where he met and was invited to be a houseguest of novelist, Ernest Hemingway. It was rumored that Ava Gardner paid a visit to the Hemingway house while he was there visiting.

He served with distinction as an Army Intelligence Officer and saw clandestine tours of duty in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Berlin, Frankfurt and other Eastern European locales unknown. After the assassination of President Kennedy he personally escorted via airplane the military file of Lee Harvey Oswald as the search for the lone gunman began.

In 1966 he married his childhood sweetheart, Carol Hasty Singletary of Thomasville. They were the parents of two sons, William Ross Singletary II and Gordon Lee Singletary.

After his Army Intelligence service he worked for Southern Bell in Newnan, Georgia and Macon, Georgia. Thereafter, in 1972, the family returned to their roots in Thomasville where he was employed by the Thomas County Federal Savings and Loan. Later he became General Manager of Pebble Hill Plantation.

Michael loved Thomasville and its many friendly residents and visitors. He would oftentimes stroll downtown Thomasville and make conversation with friends and strangers alike, pointing out various architectural landmarks along the way in his own genteel and good natured manner.

He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Carol Hasty Singletary, son

William Ross Singletary II and wife Sally and grandchildren William Ross III, Sophia Rushton, Wyatt Hasty and Mary Preston Singletary and son Gordon Lee Singletary and grandson Forrest Stanley Singletary. He so dearly loved his wife, Carol, his sons and his grandchildren. It was the love of and devotion to them that sustained him.
