Olin S. Horne, Jr., 91, passed away at Camellia Gardens of Life Care in Thomasville, GA, where he had resided since 2014.
Born April 28, 1927 to Olin S. Horne, Sr. and Irene Thomas Horne in Metcalfe, Ga.,
he was the youngest of six children. Olin Jr. was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Olin Forrest Horne, who died as a child, and two brothers and sisters-in-law: Thomas S. Horne, wife Pauline Parrish Horne, and Julian F. Horne, wife Dorothy Butler Horne. Two widowed sisters survive: Janet Lanier McClendon of Thomasville, and Harriette Horne Pearce of San Antonio, Texas.
Olin went to grade school in Metcalfe, high school at Thomasville High School, and immediately after graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and was posted in the Philippines for the duration of WWII. He remained an ardent patriot his whole life.
Upon his return from the Navy he enrolled in college and married his sweetheart Fannie Lou Butler Horne, who predeceased him in 2012. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in agricultural animal husbandry. He spent his life farming for Horne Farms and running the Horne General Store for several years.
Their marriage produced three children: Darlone Bailey Kaley (Richard), Olin Felix Horne, (Becky Parish) and Robert Horne (Donna DeBroeck); 5 grandchildren: John Bailey, Forrest Horne, Michael Horne, Madison Horne, and Thomas Horne; 7 great grandchildren. He was a lifetime member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Metcalfe, where he served as a deacon and church treasurer for many years.
He was an avid Braves Baseball fan and knew each player by name. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and growing things to give to others. He loved to share his peanut, watermelon, and vegetable crops. In winter, he would cut holly fronds with berries and deliver them. In spring and summer, he grew large patches of zinnias and sweet peas, which he cut and arranged in vases himself to give to friends and neighbors.
Funeral services for Mr. Horne will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday December 16, 2018 at Friendship Baptist Church in Metcalfe with Rev. Charles Neeley officiating. Private interment will be in Horne Family Cemetery. Guests are invited to visit his tribute page at
