Graveside services for Peggy Joan Ray, 80, of Thomasville, will be Monday, 1 PM at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Lee Waller will officiate. Mrs. Joan Ray died March 30th, 2018 at Camillia Gardens. Born March 10, 1938 in Oglethorpe County, GA, she was the daughter of Tommy and Gaynelle Peterman. Joan was one of five daughters, Martha (deceased), Shirley (deceased), Evelyn (deceased) and Marie (Warner Robins, GA). Joan grew up in Oglethorpe County, before moving to Thomas County with her family at an early age. Joan graduated from Meigs High School, and married Darby Ray on April 10, 1957. Joan and Darby moved to Thomasville and raised 2 sons, Kenneth and Ronnie. After raising 2 sons, Joan was heavily involved with her family and genealogy research. Fortunately, she found no horse thieves in the family during her research in Georgia and Alabama, only German immigrants that came to America in 1674. Joan found several relatives who died fighting in the Civil War in Virginia and had headstones placed on their graves as a result of her research. Joan is predeceased by her husband, Darby, three sisters, and one grandson, Christopher. Joan is survived by her son Ken Ray and his wife, Denise, her son, Ronnie, her sister Marie and her husband Bobby Shiver, her grandsons Kevin and his wife Cassie (Ashburn, VA), and Cameron (Kill Devil Hills, NC), Step-daughter Nicole Friske (Brooklyn, NY), Brother-in-law James Ray and his wife Dorothy (Fort Worth, TX), and many nieces and nephews.
