Philibert Melancon
Philibert Melancon, born July 5, 1937, died at his home in Ochlocknee on Sept. 3 at 6:00 a.m. A native of Gray, Louisiana, Mr. Melancon was a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force working in the intelligence, linguistic, and logistic areas, retiring in 1974 in Tampa, Fla. He travelled throughout Europe, the Middle East, as well as in Japan and the Philippines. He was also an employee of the Department of Defense for 17 years, retiring from the Pentagon in 1991. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Elijah Benjamin Yawn, of Adel. His father, George Melancon of Houma Louisiana, his brother, Kenneth Melancon of Houma, Louisiana, his nephew and godson, John Melancon of Houma, Louisiana. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Catherine Kennett Melancon; daughters, Danielle Mickey Burton of Cumming, Stephanie Pruitt of Cumming, Nicole Stan Yawn of Adel; son, Mark Elizabeth Melancon of Richmond, Virginia; eight granddaughters, Lisa Catherine Murray of Nashville, Tenn., Rachel Lizbeth Yawn, Brea Emily Yawn, Zoe Danielle Yawn, Molly Jane Yawn of Adel, Olivia Claire Pruitt of Cumming, Elizabeth Louise Melancon and Rebekah Grace Melancon of Richmond, Virginia; two step-grandsons, Timothy Church of Richmond, Virginia and Cameron Pruitt of Cumming; sisters, Elizabeth Betty Bennett of Pensacola, Fla. and Emily Em Daye of Houma, Louisiana. Mr. Melancon leaves behind extended family and friends in Louisiana, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Florida, Virginia and Mobile, Ala., along with his church family at the Glad Tidings Assembly, in Thomasville. A memorial service will be held at the Glad Tidings Assembly Church on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor R. Brent Welch officiating.
