Philip Goodenow Rust, Jr., long time resident of Thomasville, died Monday, October 25, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital in Tallahassee. Born June 10, 1932 in Wilmington, De, he was the oldest son of the late Eleanor Francis Rust and Philip Goodenow Rust. He moved to Thomasville with his family in 1948. He attended Tower Hill School and graduated from The Hill School and Georgia Tech. After working as an industrial engineer, Philip joined his father in managing the family cattle business at Winnstead Plantation. Following his parents deaths, Philip stayed on as a year round resident at Winnstead which he continued to manage until his death. He was devoted to Winnstead where he and Daniel W. Sanford, who helped him manage the plantation, created the Philip G. Rust, Jr. Nature Preserve in order to keep some local land in its natural state through modern, advanced forest and land management and conservation techniques. In particular he used rotational mowing practices which enhanced the growth of wildflowers and wildlife. His devotion was evident in the prints he and Merie Lowery created from photocopier images of plants collected at Winnstead during their walks around the plantation. Philip truly appreciated everyone who worked with him at Winnstead. Following last year s devastating tornado, he had published a public announcement naming and thanking the Thomasvillians who had helped repair the damage to Winnstesd. He was actively involved in Thomasville institutions including Thomas University, the Thomas County Historical Society, the Thomasville Entertainment Foundation, Archbold Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Thomasville Cultural Center and Brookwood School. He helped many other individuals and organizations. A complete list is not made because most of his acts of kindness were made anonymously. He is survived by his three brothers Francis, Henry and Richard and seven nieces. There will be a private burial in Wilmington, De.
