Mrs. Murphy was born Phyllis Singletary in Coolidge, Georgia. She was the daughter of Charles and Effie Singletary and was one of six children. She graduated from the old Coolidge High School and during World War II, attended the University of Georgia where she lived in the Phi Mu Sorority house. She taught in public schools until her marriage to Jarvis Wright Murphy, also of Coolidge, in 1946.
Devoting her early life to being a homemaker, raising a family, and taking care of her husband, she and her family spent weekends at the Gulf Coast, fishing and picnicking along local rivers, going for long Sunday drives, or sharing large family meals. Later, she enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, and painting landscapes. In the later years, she also enjoyed spending Sunday's with her family, watching movies. Holidays were special to Mrs. Murphy, and her home was carefully decorated each year for Christmas. She will be remembered as a woman who always loved her family, a nice car, a new outfit, and a good restaurant.
Jarvis, her husband of 38 years, died in 1984.
