Phyllis June Herndon

November 13, 1935 — June 21, 2013

Phyllis June Herndon, 77, of Thomasville, Georgia passed away on 21 June, 2013 along with her husband George, 81, in Brooks County, Georgia. Born in Carbondale, Illinois to The Reverand Simon Otho Williams and Pearl Blanche Partin Williams, she grew up alongside her family serving the church. After receiving her degrees in nursing from Missouri Baptist Hospital and St. Louis University, she graduated magna cum laude from Washington University with a Master's Degree in Nursing. She would go on to serve as the Director of Nursing Education at Rochester Methodist Hospital at the Mayo Clinic and would hold other various positions as she birthed and raised four children from 1959 to 1970 with then husband Donald Ray Hansard, 76, the family moving to Tallahassee in 1970.
She is survived by her brother Reverend James D. Williams and wife Jo, sons and daughters Stuart Paul Hansard wife, Pamela, Ann Renée Hansard, Matthew Ray Hansard wife, Sarah, and Amy Hansard Gilbert husband, Guy, grand-daughter Anna Grace Gilbert, cousin Linda Daniels, step-children Howard Herndon wife, Polly and his children Hollis and Lanie and Jill Herndon, numerous nieces & nephews, close friends Jane & Gene Bennett, as well as a wealth of friends, all of whom she adored. She is predeceased by her parents and sister, Sandra Nichols Mazzacco.
Phyllis enjoyed all that life had to offer, and was extraordinarily active in the community. She was a member of Tallahassee Medical Auxiliary, Briarcliff Garden Club, Thomasville Historical Society, Philanthropic Educational Association, and an active member of The First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville. Phyllis loved to sing, and served in the various choirs of the churches she attended. To Phyllis, these activities were an extension of the deep and loving relationships which she enjoyed with all of her children and their families.
If only one word were to be used to describe this active, vibrant, and loving soul, it would be Gracefulness. It is a Gracefulness that came from her heart and mind and faith and it touched all those she knew. Such a giving and forgiving, eloquent, and accepting person, without regard to herself or the troubles of the day; she will be missed by all and remain within and close to our hearts for eternity.
A memorial service open to all will be held for Phyllis June Herndon and George William Herndon, husband and wife, at First Presbyterian Church, 225 East Jackson Street Thomasville, Georgia on Saturday, June 29th 2013, at 11:00 AM, with reception to follow.
