Powell Waite

December 23, 1938 — March 20, 2023

Powell Dean Waite, Sr., 84, originally from Washington County, AL, passed away on March 20, 2023, in Westminster, SC.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, March 27th, at Allen and Allen Funeral Home in Thomasville, GA, and will be officiated by Leigh Ann Raynor of the United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at 9am at Allen and Allen prior to the memorial service.

Powell was born in Washington County, Alabama, to Frank Dean Waite and Doris Patrick Waite on December 23, 1938. He has an older sister, Shirley Waite Howard, and two younger brothers, Frank Dennis Waite and James Malcolm Waite. He grew up “in the country,” as he called it, and enjoyed doing his favorite things that country life afforded him: fishing, hunting, and playing all sports.. He had cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and neighbors to help him learn and grow. He attended Leroy School from 1st through 12th grade - and was a star football, basketball, and baseball player throughout his teenage years. He was proud to play for the Leroy Bears!

Powell wanted to continue playing sports in college, so he enrolled at East Mississippi Junior College and later at the University of Southern Mississippi to play football and baseball. In 1958/1959 he had the opportunity to play for a minor league St. Louis Cardinals team, and join the Cardinals for Spring Training in 1959. His brother Dennis was also pursuing his MLB career with the Cardinals organization, a unique bond between them. Eventually, both Powell and Dennis decided to make a career in something other than baseball, both choosing the field of education.

Powell went on to attend Auburn University and earned his Doctorate of Education. His career was in university education and administration. He worked for the University System of Georgia for 30+ years and finished his career as interim president at Thomas University.

Powell has many people that love him, including his wife, Susan Clark Waite, his four children, Powell Dean Waite, Jr., Elizabeth Waite Mann, Ashley Waite Riddle, and Clark Patrick Waite, and their spouses - Nicole Miller Waite, Jacob Chapman Mann, Sr., Joseph Leslie Riddle, and Elizabeth Ehrlich Waite. His pride and joy were his seven grandchildren who lovingly called him “P Daddy.” His grandchildren are Jacob Chapman Mann, Jr., Hamilton McCrady Mann, Clifton Bates Mann, Powell Dean Waite, III, Lena Ruth Riddle, Felix Joseph Riddle, and Sawyer Alexander Waite - and Sawyer’s baby sister who is on the way.

He and Susan lived at Lake Hartwell in Westminster, SC, where there are so many wonderful friends and neighbors that have become like family to them.

In honor of Powell’s memory we ask that in lieu of flowers you donate to his daughter Ashley’s organization in Lusaka, Zambia. They are working on building churches and pastor’s houses in Lusaka. Donations can be made at https://umcmission.org/advance-project/3022283/ .
