Rachel Cork Hubbard

May 17, 1931 — June 9, 2023

Rachel Cork Hubbard, age 92, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus at approximately 6:45 pm on Friday, June 9th. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the daughter of Winfred and Bonnie Lou Cork. She was raised in Flat Top, Alabama during her early life, attended West Jefferson High School then went on to attend Berry College in Rome, Georgia, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1953. Rachel met the love of her life, Howard Hubbard, after starting work at Southern Company where Howard worked as an Engineer. Rachel and Howard were married on February 10th, 1956, at Acipco Baptist Church in Birmingham where they attended regularly until moving their membership to McElwain Baptist Church. They served there faithfully until 1985 before joining Mountain Brook Baptist Church. In 1967 Rachel and Howard were blessed by the birth of their daughter, Gina. Leaving work at Southern Company after Gina’s birth, Rachel went on to become the Director of the McElwain Baptist Church Kindergarten serving in that position from 1970 to 1980. For the next two years Rachel worked as a substitute teacher in the Jefferson County, Alabama school district until enrolling in the Master of Education program at Samford University where she received her Master of Science degree in education in 1986. Rachel also taught kindergarten at W.J. Christian Elementary School in Birmingham until her retirement. Rachel tirelessly and faithfully served a number of organizations including the Birmingham Kindergarten Association, the Alabama Baptist State Executive Board, the Berry College Alumni Association, the Birmingham Council of Christian Education, Baptist Medical Centers Board of Trustees, the Advisory Council of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center and the Omega Chapter of Kappa Delta Epsilon. Rachel also participated in the shut-in visitation ministries of two churches and served as a Life Deacon at Mountain Brook Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard and spent the last eight years living in the Brookdale Retirement Community. In June of 2022 Rachel moved to Thomasville, Georgia to be near Gina and her husband Andy Thomson. She is also survived by her sister Jean Doss (David) and a loving host of extended family. Rachel never met a stranger and her most enduring sentiment was “wherever I am and wherever I go, PEOPLE are the very best folks that I know.” A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 16th at Mountain Brook Baptist Church followed by a reception in Hudson Hall. In lieu of flowers please send memorial gifts to Mountain Brook Baptist Church or to the charity of your choosing.
