Services for Richard Eugene "Gene" Sanders, Sr., 66 of Thomasville are 11 am, Thursday, October 13, 2011 at First Baptist Church. Rev. Tom Jacobs will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Sanders passed away October 10 at his residence. Born February 3, 1945 in Thomasville, he was the son of the late Richard T. Sanders and Jeanette Moncrief Sanders. On October 10, 2008 in Thomasville he married Ondria Chastain Sanders, who survives. Mr. Sanders was a member of First Baptist Church and served in the US Army's 25th Infantry Division. He spent a year in Vietnam, where he was wounded and spent 45 days in a hospital before returning to the fight. His awards include a Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal with 3 campaign stars, 2 overseas service bars, an Army Commendation Medal, a Combat Infantryman's Medal and a Purple Heart. Other survivors include son Richard "Rick" E. Sanders, Jr., and wife Rebecca, step-daughter, Amanda Wallace and husband Tom all of Thomasville; grandchildren, Jake and Ben Sanders; sisters, Mary Frances Ponder of Cedartown, Ga and Patricia "Pat" Roddenberry and husband Jim of Thomasville; close personal friend, Martha Ward and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm, Wednesday at Allen & Allen Funeral Home.
