Graveside services for Robert Albert Gelvin, 81, of Thomasville, will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Dan Spencer will officiate. Mr. Gelvin died on December 29, 2007 in Thomasville. Born on June 10, 1926 in St.Louis, Missouri, he was the son of the late John and Stella Kieslin Gelvin. On October 4, 1958 in Brunswick, Ga., he married Juanita Gaughf Gelvin, who survives. They were married for nearly 50 years. Mr. Gelvin was retired from the United State Marine Corp in 1969 after serving for 27 years and later retired from Flowers Industries. While in the Marine Corp, he served in WW II, Korea and Vietnam. He was also stationed at the Pentagon in Washington D. C. Mr. Gelvin attended the University of Georgia and graduated from Jackson Christian College in Honolulu, Hawaii with a BBA. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Gelvin enjoyed family, golfing with his friends and became an expert rose and camellia gardener under the guidance of his friend and neighbor, Sarah M. Bell. Other survivors include 2 daughters, Sonya Lorraine Gelvin of Thomasville and Tammy Anita Gelvin of Dacula, GA. Also surviving are a brother and sister in law, Elmer Phillip and Gertrude Gelvin, a sister, Dorothy Gold, a sister and brother in law, Marge and Joseph Brozek, all of St Louis, MO and several nieces and nephews. A sister, Barbara Gelvin and a brother, Charlie Gelvin, preceded him in death.
