Robert (Bobby) Randall Overmier passed away on December 7th after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Bobby was born on August 11, 1944 in Waycross, Georgia to Evelyn Moore Overmier and Charles Calvin Overmier. He leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and faith. Bobby lived most of his life in Thomasville, Georgia where he met his soulmate Carolyn Flautt Overmier while they were young neighbors on Loomis Street. It was love at first sight and they eloped in 1965 while they were both in college.
During high school, Bobby started his early career with the YMCA as Head Counselor at Camp Piney Woods. This experience ignited his passion for nurturing young people and many Thomasvillians learned to swim under his instruction! After graduation from Thomasville High School in 1962, he attended Valdosta State University where he earned degrees in Math and Sociology.
Bobby spent one year teaching 8th grade math and was then called back to the as YMCA as Youth Director. While at the YMCA he started a local chapter of Indian Guides, a program that aimed to strengthen the bond between fathers and sons. He also started Athletic Achievements to teach good sportsmanship, discipline and general life lessons through sports. Later he was offered a Superintendent position at Georgia Crate and Basket Company, where he spent 24 years and made lifelong friends. Bobby also found time to coach little league football where he had a positive impact on so many players lives, and his girls cheered the team on! He also started a successful cleaning company to help finance his girl’s secondary education. He was a busy man! He had a special way of engaging with the community, always bringing smiles and encouragement to those he encountered.
First Baptist Church was also central to his life, where he was an active member, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and fine Christian example for all that knew him.
Bobby was an avid sportsman and loved spending weekends golfing, hunting, fishing and watching FSU football games. He loved to travel and cruise with family and friends.
After almost 70 years in Thomasville, Carolyn and Bobby made their home in Panama City Beach, Florida where they continued to warm hearts and make forever friends. Bobby will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, his quiet wit, and the joy he brought to those who knew him. He will truly be missed by all who had the privilege of sharing life with him.
